More and more we learn and understand that healthy diet is a basic prerequisite for long life. What exactly does this mean? Is there a kind of ‘blueprint’ to follow? Just read on to find your way…

Desmond Smith from Chicago, IL, asks:
 
I hear a lot recently about so called healthy diet. When I eat my burger in the morning, that’s the right start for the day I would not like to miss. As I feel just great with that starter. Anything wrong?
 
Dr. Fritz:
 
Nothing wrong with swallowing a burger in the morning. As long as you furnish your body during the rest of the day with those nutrients it needs for a long and healthy life.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

As you may know, inter alia, from my previous blogs, our globe the Earth is an ecosystem strictly dependent on natural laws. So is our own life and health. This implies that no synthetic-chemical medication can ever cure a disease. Only your body can, with its immune system and self-healing power - strictly natural.
 
Doing justice accordingly, we need to furnish our body with nutrients to support our immune system and self-healing power our life and health is depending on. With special reference to certain illnesses requiring certain nutrients for betterment, and potential nutrient deficiencies.
 
As we all have a different – individual – metabolism, we certainly need to adjust our diet accordingly.

MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Still, yes, there is a kind of ‘blueprint’ we can follow basically, as modern  medical science has proven again and again. To be found across the Atlantic in a region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. With Romanic countries like France, Italy, and Spain, as well as Greece and the northern part of Africa and Middle East. In fact, that's the part of Earth where Man was created 2 and a half million years ago.
 
What makes this kind of diet so special, in terms of nutrients?
 
Although there are some varieties of Mediterranean diet, all rely on the same basic nutrients, as recommended and validated, inter alia, by the American Heart Association. Such as, inter alia,
 
  • High volume of vegetables and fruits
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • High fiber starches like beans, potatoes, whole grain bread, etc.
  • Poultry and fish
  • Eggs up to 4 times a week
  • Wine (especially red wine because of its polyphenol/antioxidant resveratrol) 


IN A NUTSHELL

For extended and healthy life, you need to furnish your body with those nutrients supporting its immune system and self-healing power best.
 
While these nutrients shall be in line with your individual metabolism, there is a fountain of youth where you can find these life essentials: the Mediterranean Diet.
 
With special reference to combatting chronic illness such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes – to name just the 3 on top of the list of chronic diseases 2 million U.S. citizens are dying each year premature – and preventable.
 
However, to be sure, you don’t have to relocate to the Mediterranean region or import those nutrients. Rather, all of these nutrients are available also on our continent, including (lab-tested) California-grown extra virgin olive oil…
