GRANNIES CAUSING GRANDKIDS' CANCER?

11/26/2017

Based on their unlimited love for grandkids, grandparents tend to fulfill any request and in many cases even try to overhaul the natural parents with their treats. Overlooking that this is not always in the best interest of their offspring’s health. Read on to learn more about.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

Jessica Brown from Providence, Rhode Island, asks:

I adore my grandkids and therefore, I can’t deny any request. Especially when it comes to sweets which I have always handy for them. Any objection, Doc?

Dr. Fritz:

Don’t we all love our grandkids and wish them all the best. Unfortunate yet, not everything grandparents believe is best for their grandkids is really good for their long-term health.

SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

According to a meta-analysis of the University of Glasgow in the UK focusing on risks involved when grandparents act as part-time carers, they do play an important (and often underestimated) role in development of their grandkids’ life and health. Good – and bad.

This scientific analysis is based on no less but 56 studies from 18 countries. With special reference to unhealthy diet as well as lack of exercise – as the most relevant pillars in life at all – but also smoking (secondhand smoke), etc.

Because in many cases, it is exactly the grandparents who pamper the little ones by giving a break from some parental rule in terms of diet, physical activity and other family regulations important for emotional balance. Such as regular bedtimes, limited screen times, and regular mealtimes, etc., supporting weight gain and obesity. Based on research at The Ohio State University's.

Not enough, levering out of early childhood routines may – believe it or not – even develop cancer later in life when growing into adulthood.

Look at a most recent study developed at famous University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), according to which poor (pro-inflammatory) diet in young age based on high intake of, inter alia, sugar, soda, and refined carbohydrates, enhances the risk of breast cancer in later (premenopausal) years by more than 40%.

Just as Cancer Research UK is rounding up the results of this analysis:
“Children’s health can be affected by range of factors, and this study from Glasgow reinforces the importance of the broad family picture. If healthy habits begin early in life, it’s much easier to continue them as an adult – and vice-versa.”

IN A NUTSHELL

Grandparents should certainly adore their grandkids to bits, but not by conveying own negative lifestyle factors to them such as unhealthy diet, obesity, lack of physical exercise, as well as exposure to cigarette smoke. Leading in many cases to chronic illness, even cancer.

Therefore, as a final advice, before starting your grandparental love parade, ask about the actual family structure and  daily routines grandkids are embedded.

This self-responsibility of grandparents is even more relevant, as many parents don’t dare to contradict grandma and grandpa. Being afraid that they may quit company with their children. Leading to a generational vicious cycle.
