To reach a long and healthy life even beyond age of 65, physical activity – besides healthy food – is the formula to avoid premature death. As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and scientifically validated at the Medical University in Vienna, Austria. THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND Don’t we all prefer to live a long and healthy life? Sure we do. However, living healthy later in life is not an automatic mechanism. Rather, this phenomenon depends on certain lifestyle criteria, with special reference to physical activity beyond age 65. Not only for leisure, including potentially walking and swimming, but also everyday tasks. WHO RECOMMENDATIONS & SCIENTIFIC VALIDATION For older adults, World Health Organization (WHO) recommends workout of at least 150 minutes or, alternatively, 75 minutes vigorously during the week, along with muscle training twice a week squats with a chair. In fact, by avoiding these lifestyle adjustments based on physical activity, more than 3 million deaths are the consequence worldwide, according to WHO. The benefits of this types of physical activities are clearly at hand: improvement of cardiorespiratory function, strengthening of muscles, a reduced risk of depression, cognitive decline, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Not only this, this type of physical activities leads to more independence and self-worth later in life, thus being less reliant on family and others. Only recently, these WHO recommendations have been scientifically validated by research with 3,300 participants aged 65 and over at the Medical University in Vienna, Austria. Supported by the Austrian Society of Public Health. As published in the Austrian medical journal Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift, and presented recently at the European Public Health Week.
