MALANGA - NATURE'S POWER OF HEALTH ?

11/19/2017

Malanga is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of unlimited plants with medicinal value for our health on our planet. Therefore, the more we know about, the better for our health – and longevity. Especially, if it is scientifically validated by renowned medical schools and research institutions. Read on to learn more about…

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

Jennifer Jones from Memphis, TN, asks:

Running in cycles with high cholesterol and blood pressure for decades, I learned recently that in Latin countries they have medicinal herbs to fight these top ailments of our modern civilization successfully. Can this be true, Doc, that they know in medicine what we have no idea about in our modern world?

Dr. Fritz:

As you have learned from our medical blogs and other science-based sources of natural medicine, only your own body can support your health and cure any disease. Provided, you furnish it with the appropriate natural remedies and modalities. With special reference to medicinal herbs our Creator has offered us in nature in abundance.

Unfortunately yet, according to a nationwide review by renowned medical journal Drug and Therapeutic Bulletin, only 3% of doctors have an appropriate knowledge about medicinal herbs.

And since they spread their lack of knowledge among our seemingly modern society, most of us have never heard about the root vegetable malanga (scientific name Xantyosoma sagittifolium) which, according to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, has been farmed since centuries, if not millenia. Also by the names of, inter alia, tannia, coco, yautia, sato-imo – or simply ‘Japanese potatoes’.

This historic background may be compared with that of Turmeric, a medicinal herb and spice mentioned already in the Holy Bible, as it was given by the 3 Wise Men to Jesus at birth more than 2000 years ago to control inflammation, and which has become ‘famous’ more and more only nowadays.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE

The (light-colored) part of malanga basically used for nutrition is tuber, looking like a potato with an ‘earthy’ taste.

In fact, its nutritional value is enormous, as it contains, inter alia,

  • Essential nutritional minerals
           such as magnesium potassium, and phosphorus,
  • protein, and
  • insoluble fiber (from malanga leaves)

With following...

              SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED HEALTH BENEFITS

According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, insoluble fiber may not only reduce the risk of digestive problems and even colon cancer.

It also may reduce high total (and especially LDL)

* Cholesterol

based on research at, inter alia, the University of Cantinas in Cantinas, Brazil.

With its content of potassium (320 mg potassium per 1/3 cup of cooked malanga), it also controls

* High blood pressure

as a defense against heart failure and stroke, and fights atherosclerosis by relaxing blood vessels, thus pumping blood through the body more effectively. Based on research at, inter alia, Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, and the Chinese University of Medical Sciences in Peking.

Not to overlook the benefit of malanga’s insoluble fiber for

* Weight control

according to the University of Campinas in Campinas, Brazil.

CONCLUSION

Malanga is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of our Earth’s unlimited kingdom of plants with medicinal value for our health. Therefore, the more we know (or at least learn) about, the better for our health – and longevity.  Especially, as it is scientifically validated by renowned medical schools and research institutions – which, to be sure, is the policy for our Blogs in general.

Therefore – as a final advice – always ask your healthcare provider for exact scientific references on the therapy he offers to administer.
