While wrinkles on our face are certainly part of aging, this process can slow down naturally with certain herbal liquids, known as essential oils for thousands of years. Just read on to learn more about, scientifically validated.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

Debbie Garfield from Columbia, Missouri, asks:

Being in my middle ages now but – knock on wood – without major health conditions, I am arrogant enough seeking a way of clearing wrinkles on my face – without synthetic chemicals and technical modalities. Any natural alternatives, Doc?

Dr. Fritz:

As we age, our faces are losing elasticity and moisture, causing wrinkles and fine lines. Especially around the forehead, eyes, and mouth.

While most of us may care about wrinkle-free clothing – just to avoid time-consuming ironing – wrinkles in our face, unfortunately cannot be ‘ironed’ out.

This, however, does not mean that the only way to smooth out creases on our face are synthetic chemical creams and lotions - or even plastic surgery.

Just let’s take a look closely at nature for alternatives instead – scientifically validated.

MANAGE FACIAL WRINKLES WITH ESSENTIAL OILS?

When we talk about essential oils as the concentrated hydrophobic liquids of powerful herbs, aromatherapy comes to our mind first place. To manage different ailments the natural way.

Yet, according to high-degree research at renowned U.S. and international medical schools, some essential oils of certain medicinal herbs do have the power to degrade the appearance and even prevent facial wrinkles successfully. Inter alia…

Frankincense

To start with this biblical herb, frankincense as the oil of boswellia is known not only to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks on the skin, but also of wrinkles and fine lines.

Based on research at, inter alia, the Mansoura University in Mansoura, Egypt.

(In brackets: we may not want to forget that frankincense oil was one of those 3 gifts the 3 Wise Men had given to Jesus’ birth more than 2000 years ago.)

Sandalwood

Besides of its anti-inflammatory virtue, this herb is known to support restoring of moisture to the skin which lessens the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face.

According to scientific validation by, inter alia, the South Dakota State University.

Lemon

As we know very well, vitamin C as a main substance in citrus fruits and also their essential oils, is an undeniable support for our immune system.

Not only this. Based on scientific research at, inter alia, the University of Catania in Italy, essential lemon oils may also counterbalance the damages of oxidation on the skin.

Yet, it is advisable not to expose too long to the sun after applying citrus essential oils, as the skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight. Better to apply these essential oils shortly before bed.

Lavender

According to research at, inter alia, the Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Lasi, Romania, lavender is not only antioxidative, it also helps to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.

Rosemary

This equally antioxidative herb has been identified of protecting the skin’s elasticity. When administering even less than 10 mg of rosemary per kg of body weight per day.

Based on research at, inter alia, the University of Novi Sad in Serbia.

Carrot Seed

This is another powerful antioxidative herb with its seeds reducing and even stopping the damage to healthy cells in the skin.

According to research at, inter alia, the Dr. Hari Singh Gour University in Sagar, India.

Rose

Rose as an equally antioxidant oil may not only reduce redness and puffiness of the skin, but support even the renewal of skin cells which makes the skin looking much younger for longer time.

Based on research at, inter alia, the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad, Iran.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate oil not only reduces inflammation but may also stop the formation of new wrinkles by reducing oxidative stress.

According to research at, inter alia, the Isfahan University in Isfahan, Iran.

Ylang-ylang

Based on research at, inter alia, the Monash University Malaysia in Monash, Malaysia, oil of this exotic herb may support skin renewal, while reducing free radicals at the same time.

Clary Sage

According to research at, inter alia, the Atatuerk University in Erzurum, Turkey.

CONCLUSION

As pointed out several times in my blogs and beyond, nature is the number one shepherd for our health and life expectancy.

With medicinal herbs as the core of nature’s therapeutic power. Including  their concentrated hydrophobic liquids we call essential oils, as known for thousands of years, documented also in the Holy Bible.

Still, 7 billion inhabitants on our planet Earth have 7 billion different metabolisms, individually.

This implies that, in order to avoid potential individual allergies with essential oils, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy recommends following steps before applying essential oils to the skin.

  • Diluting the respective essential oils in another - so called ‘carrier’ – oil.

            E.g.,

            > Olive oil

            > Avocado oil

> Grape seed oil
            > Almond oil
            > Coconut oil

            With the appropriate dosage:

             > Normal skin: 6-15 drops of the essential oil per ounce of the carrier oil
             > Sensitive skin:
3-6 drops of the essential oil per ounce of carrier oil

In case of any irritations on the skin within 24 hours, the administration may not be continued.

Otherwise application of the essential oil may take place 1-2 times a day.
