YOUNG AND BALD? MIND YOUR HEART!

12/10/2017

While we do know much about conventional risks of heart disease (such as, inter alia, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, etc.) new scientific findings from a renowned Indian research center makes us sit up and take notice. Just learn more about…

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

ohn Laramie from Vancouver, British Columbia romanticizes:

Being young in the thirties right now and despite of my baldness I feel healthy like none. Know anybody to match, Doc?

Dr. Fritz:

To be emotionally fit is certainly one of the basic prerequisites for healthy life.

We may still not underestimate that our body is a complex biologic unit with unlimited positive and negative correlations.  Especially those we hardly have heard about so far. Like, e.g., the context between age and baldness. No, I don’t mean that men lose hair the older they get – that’s not unusual. Rather, the seemingly ‘schizophrenic’ situation when young males are balding – with consequences for their health and life expectancy.

SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

Most of us have heard about risk factors like, inter alia, high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity for developing coronary artery disease – the no. 1 chronic illness leading to premature death in many cases.

But now new scientific findings make us sit up and take notice:

Male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) and premature graying may be associated with coronary artery disease.

Based on a recent study by the U.N. Mehta Institute Cardiology and Research Center in Ahmedabad, India , supported by electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, coronary angiogram and blood tests.

The results have proven that almost half (49%) of the study participants with heart problems younger than 40 had male pattern baldness and premature graying – but only 27% of the healthy group.

This implies that, according to the researchers, male pattern baldness and premature graying enhanced the risk of coronary artery disease by no less than 5.6 times. This is much higher than the risk of obesity for heart disease (around 4 times higher).

CONCLUSION

This study teaches us to differ between chronological and biological age when it comes to diagnose – and treat – any illness, especially cardiovascular risk in general.

FINAL ADVICE

Males with premature androgenic alopecia and graying are especially advised to adjust their lifestyle in terms of healthy diet and physical activity – the 2 basic pillars for healthy and long life.
