HOW TO MEASURE "HEALTH"?

6/11/2017

When it comes to ‘measure’ health, your Body Mass Index (BMI) -  the relationship between your height and weight - is suggested as an ideal formula. However, this formula has been relativized scientifically lately. Just read on….

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

Carol Baker from Fairbanks, Alaska, asks:

When I had an appointment with my doctor recently, he comforted me healthwise because of my BMI of 23. I am sure you agree, Doc, don’t you?

Dr. Fritz:

I agree – to a certain degree.

While BMI as the height-weight relationship is certainly a benchmark for some diseases, it is not the only formula which counts in our overall health.

BMI or WHR?

Just look at the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) which may be an even better measure for certain health risks – especially coronary heart disease and stroke, as well as diabetes. Based on a large-scale genetic study with more than 320,000 participants at the Massachusetts General Hospital and on a large-scale genetic study University College London and the University of Oxford, UK.

Lead researcher Dr. Michael Holmes at the University of Oxford: “Our findings suggest that it is not just how much fat an individual has, or the weight, but rather, the distribution by which an individual stores fat that plays important roles in the development of disease.”

Even with a ‘normal’ BMI (18-24.9) you may be at risk for all-cause mortality. If – this is the crucial point - those with a normal BMI still carry weight around the middle.

Scientifically validated at Loughborough University and the University of Leicester in the UK, as well as the University of Sydney in Australia. Based on research with more than 40,000 participants of the annual Health Survey for England and the Scottish Health Survey.

CONCLUSION

Don’t try to decide in favor of BMI or WHR. Adjust your lifestyle in favor of those two pillars our all health is dependent on: healthy diet and physical activity.

Just as Are Waerland, Swedish doctor and physiologist, put it right:
“We are not dealing with diseases but with wrong lifestyle. Let’s adjust our lifestyle in line with nature, and the diseases will vanish in no time.”
