While there are herbs and lifestyle factors to tackle headache naturally, international science has also identified specific foods going into this direction. Just read on to learn more about.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

Headache is a highly prevalent health issue in our ‘modern’ society. Either as a primary case, i.e. with no other medical problem involved, or secondary as the consequence (symptom) of an underlying physical or mental cause.

According to the International Headache Society (HIS) in London, UK, we differ basically between 4 types of headaches (with varying pain intensity/severity):

  • Tension-type headache - also named stress headache
(causing mild/moderate dull pain)
  • Sinus headache
(secondary headache – due to buildup of pressure from inflammation)
  • Cluster headache
(usually on one side of head/around one eye, causing intense pain)
  • Migraine
(either in one area or on side of the head/neck, also with intense pain)

In most cases being pushed away with a pill, either way. That’s it? If there were not quite a few side effects involved – a vicious cycle…

As you have learned from our previous publications, fortunately there are herbs and lifestyle adjustments to tackle the situation naturally.

HEADACHE-REPELLENT DIET – SCIENTIFICALLY VERIFIED

Not only. Recent scientific findings demonstrate that there is also some kind of nutrition waiving headache as well and which you may not want to miss. As you will find out in following.

Fruits/vegetables

With special reference to

  • berries /(like blue-/straw-/raspberries)
  • bright-colored vegetables (like carrots/bell peppers)
  • root vegetables (like beets/sweet potatoes)
  • mushrooms (like maitake/shitake/oyster)
  • spicy peppers (like cayenne)
  • leafy green vegetables (like spinach/chard/kale)
  • spices (like ginger/turmeric/garlic)

Based on the fact that they contain many antioxidants which are reducing oxidative stress & are fighting against free radical damage.

With the benefit of treating/preventing headache pain - especially migraines.

According to research at, inter alia, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Poland.

Also, research at California State University in Hayward, CA, concluded that
a low-fat/high fiber diet with plant foods only may relieve migraine symptoms.

Water

Staying hydrated is not only important for health basically.

It may reduce or even prevent headache pain specifically. According to research in the UK at Oxford University & City University London.

Caffeinated foods

Since blood vessels tend to enlarge before headache strikes, moderate consumption of caffeine may constrict them because of its vasoconstrictive property, thus easing headache symptoms.

According to the U.S. National Headache Foundation in Chicago, IL.

Which caffeine-containing foods to consider in this case? Besides coffee, inter alia,
  • green/black tea
  • chocolate

In this context, we may also not to overlook...

Herbal teas

…which are not only hydrating but also may contain pain-relieving properties.

E.g., ginger tea has proven to relieve severe migraine, according to research at Zanjan University of Medical Sciences in Zanjan, Iran.

Also chamomile tea may relieve tension headache.

According to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

Just as there is also food on the market being counterproductive in terms of headache and which we better mind.

On the other hand, there are…

FOODS POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING HEADACHE

…or worsen it because of specific additives involved. Such as
  • aspartame
  • sulfites
  • nitrites
           &
  • monosodium glutamate (MSG)

Just to name a few MSG-related examples:

- fast food
       (e.g. fried chicken/burgers, etc.)
- snacks
       (e.g. potato chips, etc.)
- frozen/processed meals/meats
       (e.g. sausages/bacons/hamburgers, etc.)
- sauces/dressings
       (e.g. barbecue/soy sauce, salad dressings)

As based on research at, inter alia, the University of Tokyo in Japan’s capital.

IN A NUTSHELL

While there are herbs and lifestyle factors to tackle headache naturally (as you have learned in our previous publications), international science has also identified specific foods going into this direction, as we have indicated in this blog.

HAVE ANOTHER UNSOLVED HEALTH PROBLEM?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 86% of non-age-related premature deaths & 77% of all diseases in general in the industrialized countries (with the U.S. being no exception) are the consequence of - yes - unsolved ('chronic') diseases.  Though preventable with help of nature.  Just tap...
