According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diabetes 2 is one of the leading and most debilitating chronic diseases of our time. Cutting down our life expectancy, with premature, non-age-related death in many cases. Without conventional medical solution so far. That’s why the American Diabetic Association (ADA) recommends nature for the way out. Read on to learn about details.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND

The conventional medical system in our industrialized world – with special reference to the U.S. – is most advanced in history. Honored with 9 out of 10 Nobel Prizes in medicine.

Still, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 86% of non-age-related deaths and 77% of all ailments in general are the consequence of some 1800 – mostly preventable – chronic diseases. With diabetes 2 on top of the chart, just behind heart failure and cancer, as a progressive disease, cutting life expectancy by 10 years potentially.

With following symptoms many pre-diabetics may nut be fully aware as, inter alia:
  • tingling/numbness in hands/feet
  • increase of thirst/urination
  • dry skin
  • tiredness
  • increased feeling of hunger
  • blurry vision
  • slow healing of sores
  • increase of infections

Although the U.S. is spending most per capita for medicine globally.

Just take the worldwide mostly prescribed drug for diabetes which, according to its producer (pharma giant Bristol Myers Squibb) comes with more than 80 side effects – but no cure.

NATURE’S WAY OUT OF VICIOUS CYCLE – VERIFIED BY SCIENCE

Instead, scientific research at, inter alia, the University of Laval in Quebec City, Canada, supported by the American Diabetic Association (ADA) is pointing out a natural way out based on certain healthy lifestyle practices. Let’s focus on 5 of those, as follows.

Healthy diet

In line with the basics of Mediterranean diet, the American Diabetic Association (ADA), in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and scientifically supported by the
* University of Granada in Granada
   & the
* Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona
   (both Spain)
recommends nutritious consumption of, inter alia,

-      whole grains
like brown rice/oatmeal/whole grain bread/ whole-wheat or legume pasta/wild rice/cornmeal/barley/oatmeal/amaranth/millet/100% whole grain-whole wheat flour/quinoa

-      fruits
with special reference to apples/oranges/cherries/apricots pears/peaches/grapefruit, etc.

-      vegetables
such as broccoli/Brussel sprouts/cauliflower/green beans/red-yellow-orange peppers/squash/onions/asparagus/salad greens

-      olive oil

-      fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like non-fried salmon/lake trout

-      nuts & seeds (unsalted)

-      legumes
 like peas/beans/ black beans/white beans/lentils/chickpeas/kidney beans/pinto beans

-      dairy
such as cottage cheese/ricotta/Parmesan/plain yogurt/low fat or fat free Greek yogurt/skimmed or low-fat milk

-      low fat fish

-      lean meat
such as sirloin/white meat from chicken/turkey

-      protein-rich food
like eggs/tuna/tofu/tempeh/skinless-boneless chicken breasts or strips/white fish filets/tofu/tempeh/sardines/skinless turkey breast

…to control blood sugar.

Vice-versa, (pre-)diabetics may refrain from following foods. Inter alia,
-      processed and fatty meats, such as bacon, hot dogs, and fatty cuts of beef and pork
-      salty foods
-      saturated fat like foods containing coconut oil or palm oil
-      partially hydrogenated and trans fat foods like shortening/ hard margarine/microwave                          popcorn/frozen pizzas,/desserts/ coffee creamer
-      sweet food additives like high fructose corn syrup/dextrose/maltose/fructose/sucrose
-      sugary foods and beverages like candy/cakes/jelly/honey/sodas/sweet tea/fruit
        drinks/concentrated fruit juices

Healthy diet has also the benefit of weight management which plays a major role in cases of diabetes. Equally as – and this is the next lifestyle factor to focus on to handle diabetes naturally –

Physical exercise

As it helps with the management of blood sugar by supporting insulin sensitivity to let blood sugar enter cells from bloodstream.

According to research at
  • School of Allied Health Sciences
           &
  • Kasturba Medical College
          (both in Manipal, India)

Along with the recommendation to exercise moderately 150 minutes (or  vigorously 75 minutes) per week. Regularly.

As an additional positive side effect, both – healthy diet and regular (preferably aerobic) exercise - also help with …

Weight management

… which is promoting also management of blood sugar by consuming less calories.

According to Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, practicing weight management for 12 months may well cut down diabetes.

Stress management

While stress by itself does not lead to diabetes 2, it may well worsen it, hampering regulation of blood sugar.

According to research at, inter alia,
  • Avalon University School of Medicine in Girard, OH
           &
  • California Institute of Behavioral Neurosciences and Psychology in Fairfield, CA

To avoid stress, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends, inter alia, to relax in nature.

Also

Non-smoking

is important when it comes to manage blood sugar, since smoking increases the risk of diabetes by roughly one third.

Along with the risk to also develop nerve damage and/or kidney disease as an additional negative side effect.
